SU-PER B-12 is actually a combination of Vitamin B-12 and Folic Acid (Vitamin B-9). These two B vitamins interact within the body, helping each other to function properly, like partners on a dance floor. Therefore it’s important to always have a source of folic acid when supplementing with B-12 – they don’t dance very well when all alone. And since the body can’t produce either of these vitamins naturally, they must come from the diet or supplementation.
B-12 and Folic Acid play many roles in the body, such as aiding in protein utilization, protecting nerves from damage, and helping with proper metabolism. But the most popular use of these two B vitamins for horses is to aid in energy, by increasing red blood cell production.
Vitamin B-12 and Folic Acid are critical in the formation of new red blood cells. Having both of these vitamins available in sufficient amounts results in not only better red blood cell production, but also in the creation of healthier red blood cells which are able to carry more oxygen for delivery throughout the body. Oxygen is directly involved in the efficient use of energy in exercising muscle, and more oxygen results in better stamina and delayed fatigue.
Other benefits of B-12 supplementation include support for avoiding anemia, creating healthy hair and hooves, improved mood and behavior, and protecting bone density in older horses.
